Back to the place it all started: Cooke & Deaton host Chesterfield Table Tennis League’s Presentation Night

The Cooke & Deaton Table Tennis team held a spectacular event close to home this week at the Riverside Club in Chesterfield, as part of the Chesterfield Table Tennis League's presentation evening. This event was particularly special for both Nicola and Alan, who began their table tennis careers in the Chesterfield league.

The Chesterfield Table Tennis League boasts a rich history, having produced numerous players who have gone on to achieve national titles. Among those who have inspired Chesterfield's legacy are Colin Deaton, Nicola's father, and Derek Marples, Alan's coach. These two mentors certainly helped to create a hotbed of talent in the local area, producing early successes like Alan and Nicola. Their influence can still be seen today in players like Chesterfield local Liam Pitchford, who started at the Colin Deaton Table Tennis Club and remains among the top world rankings. It’s remarkable that this small town has produced multiple generations of national champions.

Back when Alan and Nicola played in the league, it was one of the strongest in the country, boasting nine divisions compared to the three today. The presentation evening was a celebration of this legacy, with the full Cooke & Deaton Table Tennis team in attendance, including Alan, Nicola, Kelly Sibley, Dale Ajeto, and Eric Hall. The whole team having close connections to Chesterfield league, Dale having played in the league against Alan when they were younger and Eric who received a special award on the night for his longstanding contributions to the Chesterfield league.

The event saw a big turnout of local players who came to celebrate and watch the Cooke & Deaton team conduct a brilliant exhibition. Alan, Nicola, and Kelly participated in the presentation before changing into their playing kits for the exhibition matches.

Despite the relatively challenging conditions, expected when playing in a club rather than a brightly lit sports hall, the team performed exceptionally. The first challenge match featured (Dave) Kelly against Kelly (Sibley), followed by Luke Tattershall, who was top of the averages in Division 1, taking on Alan. These matches showcased some brilliant rallies and provided great entertainment for the audience.

The final exhibition match between Alan and Kelly was a highlight, filled with quality play, comedy, and dramatic moments. In one memorable rally, Alan fell to the floor mid-point but recovered to engage in a 30-shot exchange, ultimately winning the point. This elicited gasps and cheers from the crowd.

For Alan and Nicola, returning to Chesterfield and seeing familiar faces was a heartwarming experience. They enjoyed reconnecting with old opponents and meeting new players from younger generations. Both Alan and Nicola hope to inspire these young talents to become future champions, continuing Chesterfield's impressive table tennis history.
